Sanna | Art Center Chula

Sanna
Sanya Wong-Aram
29 August – 11 October 2008

Sanna is an exhibition of art works created by Associate Professor Sanya Wong-Aram from1963 to present. The majority of the art works on display are created using printmaking processes. There are also other art works exhibited in multi-media form. The main concept of the exhibition, which its title is derived from, can be seen through the atmosphere and the arrangement of the prints on the gallery walls. Furthermore, the major piece of art work, which is a large-scale woodcut print, may also yield the idea of this exhibition. The artist achieves this by intentionally using sa??? (a Pali word, meaning perception of physical and mental objects which may function as 'memory') or recollection of past experience, to integrate with his current ideas about art, society, culture and politics. By working with this idea, the artist wishes to reinforce his own imagination in the working processes, and hopes the audience will feel the same way while viewing the complete work.

The Art Center of Chulalongkorn University is delighted to announce an exhibition of painting and
mixed-media worksthat offerinsights into what it means to imagine notions of the ‘self’ in terms of the physical body.

Featuring expatriate and Thai artists, Sensational Selves addresses questions of the physical self as opposed to
metaphysical concepts of soul, mind, or, in Buddhist thought, atta. These artists raise critical issues, propositions
and revelations about the matter of physical identity in a world of appearances; the capacity of the human body to
represent sensation as the result of social experience and states of mind; and the place and relevance of the
humanist tradition in visual art for local contexts.
